Meridional Heat and Freshwater Transports

Timeseries

Monthly timeseries in heat and freshwater transports are available in RAPID_transports_v2024-2.nc (NetCDF format) from April 2004 to November 2024.

The methodology for generating the transports is given in Smeed et al. (2026) and derives from that of Johns et al. (2023). Previous versions of the heat transport can be found on the RSMAS data page.

Figure 1: Monthly (colours) and 18-month (black) low-pass filtered timeseries of Meridional Heat (MHT, magenta) and Freshwater (FWT, green) transports for the period April 2004 to November 2024. Positive transports correspond to northward flow. Statistics for these timeseries are Mean±SD : MHT 1.2±0.3 PW; FWT -1.4±0.2 Sv.
